Pete Townshend’s legendary rock opera, Quadrophenia, comes to Edinburgh Festival Theatre
Pete Townshend's legendary rock opera Quadrophenia is brought to the stage for the first time and appears at the Festival Theatre, Edinburgh from Tuesday 26 to Saturday 30 May as part of a UK tour.
Set in London and Brighton at the height of the Mod era, Quadrophenia is told through the eyes of Jimmy, a hedonistic style conscious teenager searching for a place to belong and a girl to love. Misunderstood by his parents and stuck in a dead end job, he sets off on a trip to Brighton that will change his life forever.
The compelling coming of age story is brought to life in this original stage adaptation of the legendary album. The evocative world of sixties Britain provides a colourful backdrop to Jimmy's journey. Pete Townshend's score captures the excitement of a nation on the brink of change.
Quadrophenia documents a culturally significant moment in Britain, the influences of which are still seen today in music and fashion. The story takes a snapshot of one of the most interesting and energising times for pop culture in Britain.
"I am excited about this new production. Its genesis in workshop in Cardiff was wonderful, and what is happening now with the Theatre Royal Plymouth feels right-sized on the one hand, but also insanely ambitious for such a tricky piece.
It's taken a long time, and a lot of wrangling to accept that Quadrophenia is probably never going to work as conventional music theatre. So I hope for a grand and chaotic explosion of music and chorus that revives the memories of being young in the '60s, but also brings those memories to life in the 21st century." Pete Townshend
The album Quadrophenia was released by The Who in 1973 followed by the iconic film in 1979. Rolling Stone magazine and VH1 have named it one of the 100 Greatest Albums of all Time. The film, which became a cult hit, was directed by Franc Roddam and, starring Sting, Phil Daniels, Leslie Ash, Toyah Wilcox and a young Ray Winstone, it captured the tense and at times violent atmosphere in the UK in the mid 1960s.
This brand new adaptation of the album is directed by Tom Critchley and features a cast of hugely talented young performers from throughout the UK who will recreate Pete Townshend's masterpiece for the stage.
Led by four young actors who will share the role of Jimmy - Ryan O'Donnell (Jimmy - Romantic), Jack Roth (Jimmy - Lunatic), George Maguire (Jimmy - Tough Guy) and Rob Kendrick (Jimmy - Hypocrite) and Sydney Rae White who will play 'The Girl', the cast also features Kirsty Malone (Mum), Dawn Sievewright (Guardian Angel) Iris Roberts (Guardian Angel), Lillie Flynn (Guardian Angel) John Schumacher (Dad), Kevin Wathen (The Godfather), Ryan Gage (Ace Face), Tom Robertson (Gang Leader), Daniel Curtis (Swing), Sean Croke (Swing) and Brennan Reece (Swing).

iSport plans F1 entry
GP2 team boss Paul Jackson is planning to bring his iSport stable into Formula One in the event that spending is capped from the 2010 season. Jackson revealed his intention in an exclusive interview with Motorsports-Magazine.com: “I aim to give a few people in F1 a kick up the backside and to show them that they are chucking money out of the window for nothing.”
But the precondition for any Formula One entry has to be a ceiling on team budgets imposed by the FIA. The earlier this precise amount is decreed - preferably within the next month - the sooner Jackson and his team can get together with sponsors and investors to decide whether they will be competing in 2010 as a separate outfit or be joining forces with one of the others already on the grid such as Toro Rosso.
“The existing teams aren’t structured to operate within a 30-million budget,” stresses Jackson in his interview with Motorsports-Magazine.com. “So it would probably be better to start with a blank sheet.” The basis of any new team would be the GP2 engineers. “We’re accustomed to doing a great job on limited resources,” he says.

NEW YORK - RAANDESK GALLERY PRESENTS: IT’S ONLY BLACK AND WHITE
The Raandesk Gallery of Art, a virtual and alternative site gallery of contemporary and emerging art in New York city announces It’s Only Black and White, a group exhibition featuring the work of 15 artists in various mediums only in black and white. The opening reception is Thursday, April 23 from 6:30 – 8:30 PM at 16 W. 23rd Street, 4th Floor, NYC.
The phrase "black and white" is deceptive in that it conveys a simplicity, of perfect boundaries and easy judgments. Yet in the work displayed in this exhibition, the viewer is introduced to a minimalism born out of exacting detail from the laborious efforts by the artist.

Foto: Raandesk Gallery of Art
Color is a fundamental aesthetic that can easily disguise flaws and distract the viewer with its showiness. Through the sole use of "black and white", the artist is forced to rely on other variables that constitute the word "beauty." The featured artists in this exhibition exemplify the grace and art in a world unhindered by color.
“I have anticipated this show since I opened the gallery three years ago” says Raandesk Gallery Founder, Jessica L. Porter, “I love the texture you get from a show with so many diverse pieces and no color!”
The exhibition includes new black & white paintings by Jason Bryant, Kevin Cyr, David Kaelin; photographs by Jennie Barrese, Louise Daddona, Sarah Kaufman, Michelle Nixon, Ricardo Yamamoto; mixed media works by Shinji Turner-Yamamoto, Robert Kent Wilson; and drawings by Miriam Castillo, Kim Sillen Gledhill, Jee Yun Lee, Kellyann Monaghan, Jennifer Murray and Chris Taylor.
Information on these artists can be found on the gallery’s website, www.raandeskgallery.com.
Please join us in seeing the world through a different light at the opening reception, April 23, 6:30-8:30 PM, 16 W. 23rd Street, 4th Floor.
RAANDESK® GALLERY OF ART combines a virtual resource of contemporary artwork by emerging artists through www.raandeskgallery.com, with ART@IGC, the gallery's regular exhibition venue and through temporary alternative site exhibitions and special events across the country.
Based in New York City and launched by attorney-by-day Jessica L. The Echo Fields: Val Britton + Michael Meyers| Jennifer + Kevin McCoy
In the main gallery a fantastical universe of abstract mark-making, route-lines and surreal sculptures allude to the fluid territory between the knowable and the unknown. Val Britton melds a cartographer’s precision with a dreamer’s sense of abandon to create map-like constructions that chart her journeys through the blurry terrain of memory and imagination.
Layers of paint, ink and cut-outs are at once explosive and serene, echoing the paths she traces and re-traces in an effort to chart out familiar territory in a chaotic, uncertain world. Michael Meyers considers how we construct views of ourselves by receiving and expressing information. With existential humor, he sculpts tools for looking (telescopic) and tools for projecting (megaphonic). Solid wooden objects are made malleable with hinges and folds, dissolving sure geometry into ambiguous organic forms. His work suggests that communication and perception are too mutable to grasp from a single vantage point.
In the second gallery work by internationally acclaimed husband-and-wife team, Jennifer and Kevin McCoy. The McCoy’s multimedia artworks examine the genres and conventions of filmmaking, memory and language. They are best known for constructing subjective databases of existing material and teasing the viewers mind to examine reality.
The duo invite you into unsettling fantasy worlds through their elaborately constructed miniature film sets with lights, video cameras and moving sculptural elements that create live cinematic events. The McCoy’s work has been widely exhibited in the US and internationally. Recent exhibitions include the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the British Film Institute in London, The Beall Center in Irvine, CA, pkm Gallery in Beijing, the San Jose Museum of Modern Art, the Nevada Museum of Art and Artists Space in New York. Their art is held in numerous museum collections including the Metropolitan, NY MoMA, Milwaukee Art Museum and MUDAM in Luxembourg. Articles about their work have appeared in Art in America, Artforum, The New York Times, The Wire, dArt International, Wired Magazine, and The Independent.

Firefox 3 has finally surpassed the popularity of IE 7 in Europe....

Firefox 3 has finally surpassed the popularity of Internet Explorer 7 in Europe, according to Web analytics firm StatCounter. Internet Explorer's total market share across all versions, however, still exceeds that of Firefox.
Mozilla's Firefox Web browser has made impressive market share gains in Europe over the past few years. At the moment StatCounter shows it to be just an about half a percentage point below Internet Explorer 7. In the latest market share report released by StatCounter, Firefox 3 has finally surpassed Internet Explorer 7 as the most popular browser in Europe in a breakdown by version number.
Firefox 3 holds 35 percent and IE 7 has 34 percent in that region. The recent decline of IE 7 in the past week can largely be attributed to the release of IE 8, Microsoft's new browser. According to StatCounter, IE 8 has grown to 2.3 percent in Europe, with most of those users upgrading from IE 7. This change was enough to put Firefox 3 on top. IE 6, however, still has 11 percent market share, which means that all users of Microsoft's browser across all versions still outnumber the total number of Firefox users.
"The move is partly explained by a small switch from IE 7.0 usage to IE 8.0 but also by growing market share overall by Firefox 3.0," said StatCounter CEO Aodhan Cullen in a statement. "The data shows that Firefox is closing the gap and is now just 10 percent behind all IE versions in Europe. In February, the global market share of IE 7 is 41 percent but Firefox 3 is 24 percent”

Tønder Festival 2009 - 27th - 30th August
Fit for Future
Cultural diversity and event economy in Southern Denmark.
The Tønder Festival as the pivot of new cultural growth
and expansion.
In the Autumn of 2007 delegates representing trade and industry, culture and tourism met in Tønder in the southern region of Denmark to discuss the possibility of establishing an international meeting place ? a Folk Music Forum ? as an extention of the activities of the internationally recognized Tønder Folk & Roots Festival, which, established in 1975, can celebrate its 35th anniversity in August next year.
During the Spring and Summer of 2008 a documentation analysis of the influence, locally, regionally and internationally, of the present-day Tønder Festival, was carried out, focusing, among other things, on the economic aspects and not least on the estimated incriment, infused by the festival into the town and the southwestern part of the region. The analysis also considers new commercial models, which can benefit the culture and the event economy of the entire region.
The not insignificant cultural tourism every year during the last weekend of August of an estimated 20.000 festival guests has a considerable cultural and economic effect, and not only in the town of Tønder, but in a broad belt to the east, north along the West Coast and south across the border into Schleswig-Holstein as well.
The analysis, made by the Copenhagen Business School, showed that the Tønder Festival during its four days in August, as a primary turnover infuses a minimum of 10 million euros into the town and the region.
The analysis also pointed out that the involvement of more than 2000 volunteers provided a considerable social capital of competences within the areas of organising and management, the basis of new commercial models, which can be exported ? within the cultural area as well as outside it.
In the light of these conclusions a grant from Region South
Denmark, the Town of Tønder and the Danish Ministry of Culture has been made available for a pilot study project, in order to research the possibilities of extending the activities of the Tønder Festival and for developing new innovative cultural activities, in order that the social and economic incriment, important for the entire region, can be extended to the rest of the year, using the brand and the reputation created by the Tønder Festival for the region.

White Lies to Roskilde
The British dark rock band is added to the poster together with two original bands from Denmark and Finland, respectively.
There is just one week until the big poster day – yet that does not keep Roskilde Festival from pulling a few names out of the bag. This week offers burning-hot rock from the UK as well as a few original and unorthodox acts from further north.
WHITE LIES (UK) play black romantic rock inspired by classic bands such as Joy Division and Echo & The Bunnyman. Their debut album To Lose My Life is filled with dark lyrics and catchy hooks of the kind suited for the charts as well as lonely rooms. Please welcome this next exciting act in the line after Interpol and Editors.
BALSTYRKO (DK) is an exciting mix of very different types of Danish talent. The untraditional trio plays peculiar circus pop in which Ane Trolle’s mild voice joins efforts with Blæs Bukki’s deep semi-talking vocals.
PAAVOHARJU (FIN) create a singular mix of impressionistic pop, romantic piano lines, mournful siren song and electronic effects. They rarely perform live and should be experienced by those who have been moved to distant skies by Icelandic bands such as Sigur Rós or Múm.

African acts at Roskilde Festival 2009
Few Nordic music events offer the same opportunity as Roskilde Festival to become acquainted with the global music scene. This year is no exception. The festival adds three African top acts that – along with Tony Allen and Amadou & Miriam – are drawing a beautiful map of Africa over Roskilde.
ISSA BAGAYOGO (MALI) is called 'Techno Issa' by his fellow countrymen. His music is a successful meeting between North Africa and Europe. Chanting and improvised sequences are crossed with electronic elements – always with the ngoni lute and an energetic beat at the centre.
KASAI ALLSTARS (CD) is a Central African super group who defy age-old regional conflicts and each add their own touch to the collective. They are next in the congotronics line that has already given us Konono N°1. The festively painted band had to cancel in 2007 due to visa issues. Roskilde Festival is happy to have them back on the poster in 2009.
ROKIA TRAORÉ (MALI) is one of North Africa's true divas. She supplies funky and rocking Afro-beat with lots of energy and intensity. But she can also deliver gorgeous ballads in which the small woman with the big voice sounds like a Malian version of Billie Holiday or Laurie Anderson.
Stay tuned...
That is all from the African continent this time around. Roskilde Festival is ready on Wednesday with the last announcement before the Easter holidays. And there is really something to look forward to! The big poster day is closing in – lots of music is announced on Thursday 16 April.

Political change is the hope for the US solar industry
It is not only the record audience at the Solar Power International 08 in San Diego, at the end of last year, proving the increased interest in the US solar market. But it is also the visions and current trends of the industry which indicate a sustainable positive development of the US market, despite the economical crisis and financing issues.
The solar power show was opened by a surprise guest, Californian governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, in front of high ranking guests alongside with exhibitors from around the world. But not only because of the attendance of prominence from business and politics, the attention of the whole industry is significantly growing.
The host of the Solar Power International stated, regarding the success of the fair, on the official website www.solarpowerconference.com: “2008 a Huge Success! Almost 18,000 professional attendees registered to participate in this year's conference and expo and another 5,700 members of the general public walked the show floor during our 3-hour "Public Night", bringing our grand total to more than 23,000 participants!”

SUMMER BREEZE Festival 2009
The wheather in April is rather of a scottish kind. But summer keeps moving on with growing strength. According to the calendar
spring has come already so winter is finnished more or less. That the wheather will become even better and remain like that until
September can be taken as granted.
After this wheather introduction let's come to the point. Planing the 2009 issue of SUMMER BREEZE keeps us quite busy these days.
Ticket sales keep going in top gear and more than half of the tickets have been sold already. So are the 10.000 tickets which were supposed to come with a free DVD. As many of you have been disappointed not to have received the DVD though the ticket number was below 10.000 please note: Ticket numbers do not indicate how many tickets have been sold. But the DVD was not the only reason to order a ticket way in time obviously. The demand is still high and has not changed. To avoid being without a ticket in the end make sure you will order yours in good time.
Still we are trying to realize most of your ideas and suggestions for the better. One of our main problems was the traffic situation.
To avoid such things this year we have decided to work with a totally new system for the sluices. Therefore we do need way more
space than in the past. That is why we decided to do our get in check on the so far day parking just across the street from the
camping site. The big advantage will be we can act there totally independent from the wheather as the muddy ground actually was the
reason for the problems in the past. Also filling the camping ground will happen a different way. The new ground is big enough to avaoid traffic jams like we had it last year. More details shortly.

Every year, the festivities in the port of Hamburg attract more than a million people.

Celebration of the “Port Birthday”, the HAFENGEBURTSTAG HAMBURG goes back to the Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa, who issued a charter to the citizens of Hamburg on 7 May 1189, granting exemption from payment of any toll or customs duties for their ships on the River Elbe from the city to the North Sea. This date has been regarded ever since as the Birthday of the Port of Hamburg.
The heart of the HAFENGEBURTSTAG HAMBURG is the programme of attractions along the River Elbe, from the Museum Harbour of Oevelgönne to the landing stages as far as Baumwall.
The highlights include the grand arrival and departure parades of the tall ships, historic ships, sailing and motor yachts and other vessels, the Dragon class regattas, the big fireworks display on the Saturday evening, and the unique Tug Ballet on the Saturday afternoon.

fresh acts on Pavilion Junior at Roskilde Festival
As always, the audience can experience the most important acts of tomorrow before the four music days begin.
Since 2000, Pavilion Junior has been one of the most important platforms for new bands in Scandinavia. Today, Roskilde Festival reveals the first batch of acts that will play during the warm-up days from 28 June to 1 July.
THE 20BELOWS (DK) plays melodic punk rock and has already toured from coast to coast in the US. Social Distortion and Ramones are among the sources of inspiration.
GIANA FACTORY (DK) plays charming new wave-ish pop. Lead singer Loui Foo also played Roskilde last year with The Raveonettes as a replacement for her pregnant sister Sharin.
JOOKS (DK) is a member of now-defunct hip hop act Rent Mel but he has already come a long way as a solo artist. His everyday hip hop stories are well told and with a steady flow.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs to Roskilde
Gang Gang Dance and The Pains of Being Pure at Heart are also added to the programme in this Wednesday's New Yorker package.
Today's first act is from the beginning of the new millenium, the second has released a couple of records – and the third act is brand-new. Three different generations of New Yorker indie music in a world whose tempo just keeps accelerating.
YEAH YEAH YEAHS visited Roskilde Festival already in 2002 – a time when the band's current status was just in the making. Style icon Karen O and her male esquires showed cutting edge and raw attitude from the beginning with their punk art rock – and they practically stole the hearts of an entire generation with the adorable ballad ”Maps”. On their coming album It’s Blitz! you sense the inspiration from Blondie and recent years' new rave wave.
GANG GANG DANCE mix electro, house and grime hip hop with avant-garde and all sorts of distant aromas from the third world. They manage to deliver this genre anarchy live so that you catch all of its edges, knots and numerous impulses.
THE PAINS OF BEING PURE AT HEART was one of the hottest and most popular bands at the recently finished music festival SXSW in Austin, Texas. Their 80s-inspired guitar pop is just as sensitive and heart-rending as the name suggests. Fans of British bands such as The Smiths and The Cure can look forward to a line of perfect pop gems from one of this year's most hyped acts.
Pavilion Junior acts on Friday
Friday leads us towards the Pavilion Junior stage which presents upcoming music in the warm-up days leading up to the festival. Here you find the same variation of musical genres as during the final four music days. So, Friday brings the first armload of freshly gathered upcoming acts.
