Deadmau5 to Roskilde

One of the hottest DJs right now is added to the programme together with 2562 and Mike Sheridan.

Electronic music has favourable terms at Roskilde Festival again this year. Roskilde Festival has three exciting acts ready that should generate enthusiasm and joy with everyone who loves partying to an electronic beat.

DEADMAU5 (CAN)
is one of the most popular and requested DJs today. His already enormous catalogue reaches far – techno, house, trance and electro are the starting points for the young Canadian who always plays wearing a giant mouse head that grins from ear to ear. Deadmau5 outdistances practically every living thing in electronic music. One of this summer’s hottest and most explosive dance parties awaits.

2562 (NL)
is often associated with the British dub step genre with is deep bass tones and dark minor chords. Yet, the Dutchman also adds elements of minimal techno and house so that one could speak of a new continental trend in the popular music genre. The debut album Aerial has been claimed a masterpiece by several media and could turn out to become a standing neo-classic like Burial’s Untrue.

MIKE SHERIDAN (DK)
is Danish music’s new wonder boy. The first album from the young Dane is called I syv sind (In Two Minds) and shows a promising artist who is in full swing developing his sound. Fans of Trentemøller will recognise some of the same ultra-Scandinavian, minimalistic electronica – but Sheridan is a talent in his own right whose future career it will be extremely exciting to follow.

The Hamburg Players present Cat on a Hot Tin Roof by Tennessee Williams

20090329-hamburgplayers.jpg
It is a hot sticky summer in the Mississippi Delta. The wealthy Pollitt family has gathered to celebrate patriarch Big Daddy’s 65th birthday.

But below the surface, turbulent emotions are brewing. What Big Daddy and Big Mama don’t yet know is that this will be Big Daddy’s last birthday – he is dying of cancer. Their eldest son, Gooper and his wife, Mae, are scheming to get younger son, Brick, cut out of the inheritance. Brick, an ex-footballer, has taken to drink since the death of his best friend, Skipper. Brick is estranged from his beautiful wife, Maggie, who is fighting tooth and nail to win back his love.

A layer of mendacity – of lies – has built up over the family’s disappointments and insecurities. Who is going to be bold enough to start telling the truth now? Is there enough love left to save?

Cat on a Hot Tin Roof is an "interplay of live human beings in the thundercloud of a common crisis" (T. Williams).

BENTLEY SOAPBOX SUSPENDED IN NYLON

20090328-mtm.jpg
One of MTT Technologies', formerly MCP Tooling Technologies Group, newest prototyping systems has been used in the production of the Bentley Soapbox Team’s entry at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.

The vehicle came second in what is one of the most popular events at the Festival - a great result for the whole team!

Anxious to compress the time between production of CAD data and finished parts, Bentley’s Head of Concept Design, Jim Shaw, who is also team designer and driver, invited MTT Technologies to become involved in the production of around 20 mechanical parts for the vehicle.

This led to key components of the vehicle’s suspension system being produced using MTT's new Nylon Vacuum Casting System (www.mtt-group.com/nylon-vacuum-casting.html).

The process is already being used commercially by several major automotive manufacturers and is a brand new technology. It enables Nylon parts to be produced in a matter of days without the need for injection moulding and the associated cost and lead time required for the production of steel tooling which makes it ideal for producing quick prototypes and for low volume production runs.

Unlike generative processes which produce porous, sintered Nylon prototypes from powder, MTT's Nylon Vacuum Casting System produces fully dense parts in Nylon 6 - including those with complex geometries and thin wall sections as thin as 0.3mm.

Current commercial applications include living hinges, automotive air inlet manifolds, trims, brackets, and electrical housings. When Nylon parts are required for crash testing purposes, they can be produced in a matter of days using this process.

Pet Shop Boys to Roskilde Festival

The British duo is added to the programme together with M. Ward and Mikael Simpson & Sølvstorm.

This Friday is all about men. Three prominent male voices should make it a happy weekend for festival-goers with a hankering for solid songwriting and rich lyrics.

PET SHOP BOYS (UK) is one of music history’s most durable duos – 50 million albums have been sold by lead singer Neil Tennant and sound wizard Chris Lowe. Few others can create as accessible – but at the same time serious – pop music from the baffling big-city life and the hardships of love. Their continued relevance has been sealed at this year’s Brit Awards by the honorary award for Outstanding Contribution to Music. In addition, they have just released their eleventh album – Yes – full of bone dry lyrics and catchy tunes. Roskilde Festival is very special to the duo as this is where they played their first festival concert back in 1997.

M. WARD (US) is an American singer-songwriter who in songwriting and inspiration draws heavily on patinated music genres such as country, blues and folk. His warm and slightly drawling vocals give new life to old song traditions in a wrapping that appeals to fans brought up on indie and alternative music.

MIKAEL SIMPSON & SØLVSTORM (DK) manage to turn songs about isolation and melancholy into an out-tuned and festive concert experience. After touring with Trentemøller, the versatile pop musician is now ready to regain the spotlight himself – with a new critically acclaimed album and the backing band Sølvstorm to support him.

Kanye West to Roskilde Festival

The hip hop and R&B star is added to the programme alongside Eagles of Death Metal, Oh No Ono and Peter Sommer.

Roskilde Festival continues in the absolute world-class hip hop groove. Last week the festival announced the young phenomenon Lil Wayne. He is not the only American hip hop star appearing on this year's Roskilde poster.

KANYE WEST (US) is no longer just one of the superstars of hip hop. With 808s & Heartbreak, Kanye West seriously conquers the pop scene which he has always flirted heavily with on his earlier, melodic hip hop landmarks. The phenomenon and style icon last played on Orange Stage in 2006 – and since then he has won over a steadily growing crowd. Roskilde Festival is happy to present yet a pop and hip hop party in American widescreen.

Budvar Cheltenham Jazz Festival 2009

Budvar Cheltenham Jazz Festival (28th April – 4th May) has become an unmissable date in the jazz calendar due to its unique blend of British stars, one off collaborations and the freshest new sounds. In the 2009 programme, up-and-coming young musicians sit alongside some of the jazz scene’s most influential and respected performers.

With more opportunities for dancing, wining and dining than ever before, this year’s festival is a whistle-stop tour of the world’s finest jazz set to a stunning regency backdrop.

At the head of this year’s star-studded programme, world famous virtuoso violinist Nigel Kennedy will celebrate the Bank Holiday in a spell-binding festival finale. Undoubtedly one of the most important violinists Britain has ever produced, Kennedy’s passion for jazz resulted in the acclaimed album Blue Note Sessions in 2006.

He brings his Polish Jazz Quintet to Cheltenham to perform exciting high-energy compositions which roam from blues and bebop to ballads and bossa-nova, interspersed with an occasional blast of metal. This is a unique and exciting opportunity to see this icon of British music.

International starlet Madeleine Peyroux returns to Cheltenham following her sell-out performance in 2007. Her previous albums Half the World Away and Careless Love sold over a million copies, earning critical-acclaim for her jazz/blues interpretations of works by artists such as Leonard Cohen and Edith Piath. In the intimate setting of the Everyman this will be Peyroux at her jazz club best.

Roskilde donated to hip hop centre in Gaza

The Roskilde Festival Charity Society supports young people in one of the world’s hot spots.
The Roskilde Festival Charity Society donates one million Danish kroner (approx. € 135,000) to establishing a hip hop centre in Gaza.

The Gaza Strip has been occupied in the past two years and poverty has escalated. Moreover, the area has recently been hit by a devastating war, and many young people have lost friends and relatives.

Music – and especially hip hop – has become a lifeline for the young people in Gaza. Music and the poetry that hip hop expresses work as a vent through which young people can give way to their frustrations, hopes and dreams in their everyday lives of constant repression and human rights violations.

Much-needed support for Gaza
The donation of one million Danish kroner (approx. € 135,000) is given to the Danish Centre for Culture and Development (DCCD) – an institution under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark whose purpose is to incorporate culture in the Danish development aid.

“With this donation we would like to mark a much-needed support to an area in one of the hot spots of the world, which needs all the help that we in the Western world are able to give. This is a cultural project directed at young people, and it corresponds perfectly with our objects clause while at the same time making a statement,” says Roskilde Festival’s managing director Henrik Rasmussen.

Exhibition of Kenno Apatrida in Wilde gallery Berlin

WILDE Gallery is pleased to announce the solo exhibition of Kenno Apatrida, his first with the gallery on Friday March 27th. Apatrida’s works were recently displayed at SCOPE New York Art Fair, gaining great report and attention with the American public.

20090324-wilde-galery.jpg

Kenno Apatrida, originally from South America has spend the last 18 years in Berlin as an involuntary resident, goes against the tide of contemporary thought by unleashing works of art that defy many current trends in art making. His works are phantasmagorical, spiritual and transcendental, humorous and painfully genuine.

Apatrida’s practice refers to philosophical precursors, ranging from shamanistic rituals to the nightmares of William Blake and Henry Füseli, William Burroughs, political junk from the former GDR and Zen Buddhism. Apatrida’s works go through an alchemical process and are returned to us as icons of spirituality specific to our modern age, transformed to shrines of fallen empires, ancient mythology, cultural constructs and the many ghosts of the past that continue to both enrich and enslave the present.

WILDE Gallery was founded September 2007 in Berlin and deals with contemporary art as well as art advisory services. The gallery shows 8 to 10 exhibition per year with international contemporary artists.

Roskilde Cinema 2009

This year, Roskilde Cinema offers more seats, reduced power consumption and Scandinavian films.

Through the past couple of years, Roskilde Cinema has enjoyed increasing popularity and therefore expands to 900 seats this year. Measured in seats, Roskilde Cinema thereby becomes Denmark’s second largest cinema.

In addition, the technique will be upgraded so that Roskilde Cinema as of this summer goes 100 % digital. Practically all films will be shown in full HD format, and the sound will be improved and adjusted to the surroundings.

At the same time, Roskilde Cinema is working on making the cinema greener. Roskilde Cinema has made an ambitious objective for reducing the power consumption. Already as of 2009, the cinema expects to use 30 % less power than in 2008 – and the objective is to achieve a reduction of approximately 60 % over a period of three years.

As a part of Roskilde Festival’s overall focus on climate in 2009, Roskilde Cinema will make an account of the power consumption per guest in the cinema.

Scandinavian focus
Roskilde Cinema’s programme will have a strong Scandinavian focus this year.

”The past couple of years have offered films such as the Swedish absurdly funny cult film Gitarrmongot (The Guitar Mongoloid), the Swedish youth comedy Hata Göteborg (Hating Gothenburg), the Norwegian mad travesty of Tarantino's Kill Bill, Kill Buljo, have been a great success with the festival audience. We want to build on that success,” says cinema manager Torsten Hvas.

Many Scandinavian films contain a skewness and humour that fit perfectly with the levity and playfulness which mark the atmosphere at Roskilde Festival.

”People want to be entertained and at the same time have an extraordinary experience – and that's what we want to give them with this year's film programme,” says Torsten Hvas.

Treats from the programme
This year's programme offers the Norwegian Nazi-zombie-gore-comedy Død Snø (Dead Snow). To guarantee entertainment in the late hours, the programme is horrored up so the audience can look forward to the Finnish horror film Sauna (Filth), Lordi's fantasy thriller Dark Floors and the Swedish social-realist vampire film Låt den rätte komma in (Let the Right One In).

Roskilde Cinema also presents a couple of Danish premiere screenings. Look forward to a Bollywood-remake of the Danish film Pusher and the slightly brutal Australian drama West.

Like in the rest of Roskilde Festival's programme, Roskilde Cinema also makes room for the new growth layer. Roskilde Cinema will this year show films from the National Film School of Denmark, short films from dvoted.net, and the film club D.Y.I will present their newest creations. In addition, Roskilde Cinema is currently working on establishing a collaboration with two major international film festivals that will help find upcoming film talents from other parts of the world.

Tidworth Festival 2009

Christian Moullec will be taking to the skies at Music in Flight this year. Moullec who is also known as "Gooseman", has taught a flock of feathered friends to fly in a v-shaped formation behind his microlight.

The performance is titled Vol avec les Oiseaux or Flight with the Birds. Moullec will be flying in synchronized timing to vocal and orchestra pieces from Saint-Saens' opera Samson & Delilah and will be flying with his flock of graylag geese and Canadian cranes.

Moullec said: "I love to fly with these birds, who now think of me as their parent. To be able to fly with them and to observe them so closely in flight is an incredible privilege. It is difficult to describe the feeling of gliding in the air with geese in regular formation at my side - but there is simply nothing else like it in the world. I first learnt to fly a micro light in order to be able to fly with birds - so to be coming to Wiltshire and sharing this flight is a wonderful opportunity."

With careful training, the birds accept Christian and his micro light and come to consider him as their parent, following him in flight. His first successful flight was in 1996 when he flew across part of France accompanied by 12 barnacle geese.

Roskilde Festival 2009 -

Yesterday Roskilde Festival served up pop from England and Afro-beat from Nigeria. Today the festival crosses the Atlantic and proudly presents two arch-American acts who are both strong profiles in their respective music genres.

LIL WAYNE is among the very hottest hip hop acts at the moment. His latest release is the both eccentric and pop Tha Carter III. The critically acclaimed album shows that the New Orleans-based rapper with the Rasta dreads is probably not all that out of line when he calls himself the world's best living rapper.

SOCIAL DISTORTION has since the early 80s released album after album with melodic mid-tempo punk rock that draws as much on The Rolling Stones and Johnny Cash as it does on the more aggressive hardcore and punk scene. The legendary and influential band has inspired numerous current rock and punk bands.

Both Lily Allen and Tony Allen play this summer's festival.

This Wednesday's new acts do not have much else in common but the last name – they are not related to one another, not in one way or the other. They come from two different worlds musically, personally and geographically. Where else but Roskilde Festival can so different names appear under the same headline?

LILY ALLEN (UK) has for the past couple of years controlled the gossip columns and the charts with her outspoken attitude and inescapable pop songs. With inspiration from R&B, synth pop and ska, Lily Allen creates her own personal universe. Songs such as ”Smile” and ”The Fear” will last much longer than the blinking tabloid headlines.

TONY ALLEN (NGA) is, according to Brian Eno, perhaps the greatest drummer who has ever lived. The almost 70-year-old Nigerian invented the influential Afro-beat genre together with Fela Kuti way back in the 60s. He is releasing the new album Secret Agent in June and visits Roskilde Festival, placed behind a nine men strong band.

The best German Fifa player

nGize.FSP, European top eSport club, proudly announces that their famous Fifa 09 player André „AndResoN“ Richter was invited to the „Zocken Deluxe“ (Playing Deluxe) event by Electronic Arts (EA) in Cologne, Germany.

André has been able to develop as a role model for many professional Fifa players and therefore embodies nGize.FSP and its sponsors FSP Group, SPARKLE Computer and PUMA allesraubkatze in the best possible way.

"On Saturday I will be in Cologne again, to represent nGize.FSP at a brand new event from EA. There will be prizes worth more then 1500€ to be won. More music at Roskilde Festival 2009

This Monday Roskilde Festival presents a handful of the lesser known acts. Acts like these add edge and character from the smaller stages to the music programme.

BLACK DICE (US) cultivate their own twisted rave music – which will probably not sound quite normal until year 2090. The New Yorker trio's concerts are sonic total attacks full of electronic trance rhythms, free-flowing synthesizers and African percussion.

THE CHAP (UK) puts together disco, funk, electronica and disturbing experimental rock in a changeable mix – so that the outcome almost sounds like a meeting between concept rockers The Residents and electro popsters Hot Chip.

THE DODOS (UK) take their starting point in percussion-based tribal music, which Animal Collective have also explored on their early albums. But The Dodos also know how to write ear-catchers, which they prove on the breakthrough album Visiter.

FUCKED UP (US) plays aggressive punk rock with a serious agenda, which has won the band lots of praise – not least because of the latest masterpiece, The Chemistry of Common Life. Black Flag's raw energy and Hüsker Dü's musical curiosity are retrieved with Fucked Up – but their life-affirming shows throw the band's visionary anger into even sharper relief.

STEINSKI (US) has since the early 80s broken ground for today's pirate artists such as DJ Shadow, Girl Talk and The Avalanches. Much of Steinski's influential music has been banned because of copyright issues – it was not until recently that What Does It All Mean? 1983-2006 Retrospective was released.

Wednesday, Wednesday, Wednesday…
Wednesday is Roskilde Festival's traditional announcement day – but this Monday the festival just could not help itself. More new acts are coming on Wednesday.

New Energy Husum - Germany - reports record results

- Renewable energy defies the economic crisis
- New Energy Husum closes with record visitor numbers
- 2010 fair already almost fully booked
- Wind associations agree international co-operation in the small wind turbine sector

The words of the Husum Exhibition Centre boss, Hanno Fecke, on the opening day of this year’s New Energy trade fair were somewhat prophetic. “The real power, the great strength and the worldwide benefits of renewable energy particularly stand out in a time in which virtually all the other industries are starting to ail in the maelstrom of the global economic crisis”, said Fecke.

And then New Energy opened its doors and the visitors flooded and flooded in. During the four days of the trade fair the total number of visitors to the stands of the 150 exhibitors from all areas of the renewable energy sector exceeded 15,000. The organisers had “only” expected around 12,000 visitors, and at times the traffic around the North Frisian county town came to a complete standstill. Local police spoke of scenarios reminiscent of the great HUSUM WindEnergy trade fair.
“Other fairs representing other industries are registering a fall in visitor numbers whereas the renewables sector and we in Husum can report record figures!” confirmed a thrilled Hanno Fecke.
The exhibitors shared this optimism: “We are still looking for a large number of qualified employees”, they said.

Visitors from all over the world
This year New Energy has shown that it has become far more international. Some visitors had come from quite a distance: Albert Klaas of Elektro Klaas announced that “At our stand we had visitors from Russia, Finland, Denmark, Belgium, the United Kingdom, Austria, India and North Korea, as well as from all the various German federal states”, reflecting the experiences of a large number of other exhibitors.

For the first time, New Energy Husum 2009 exhibited the whole range of areas of renewable energy
“Numerous exhibitors presented new products here that have not been shown anywhere else in the world, especially in the photovoltaic sector and products using state-of-the-art heating technology.

Stars at Rentolava include the Jamaican reggae artist Beenie Man and the Nigerian afrobeat virtuoso Femi Kuti with his band The Positive Force.

As for Finnish groups, the Ilosaarirock Festival will present such acts as Children of Bodom – with one of the few gigs they'll be doing in the summer – PMMP and Disco Ensemble. Search for the performers continues, as also this summer more than 80 bands will take to the stage over the three festival days.

The tickets will be sold from 4th of May onwards and the rest of the program will be finalised over the spring.

– The program is about half way finished and we're still working hard on it. Already we've managed to establish that Ilosaarirock festival will stay true to its style with plenty of exciting, yet so far lesser known groups taking to the stage.

We still haven't been aiming to gather megastars, but focused on finding the best groups from the marginal, says Panu Hattunen of Joensuu Pop Musician's Association.

After years of wooing, the American metal noise mayhem Dillinger Escape Plan, rarely seen in Finland, has been confirmed to appear at the festival. It's impossible to put The Dillinger Escape Plan in just one genre, as their music has got elements from hardcore, metal, punk, progressive rock and jazz. The Beenie Man (JAM) at Rentolava is one of the brightest stars of dancehall reggae today. (more)

Eddy Brimson at The Edinburgh Festival

Eddy Brimson, presents his first pure stand-up show at the FREE FESTIVAL. In this hour-long show Eddy examines how we are all free to make choices in life, one of the biggest being whether or not to have kids, a hot topic due to Scotland's dwindling population. Is it to be the Early Learning Centre or the Flight Centre? ' Oh the joys of being child free ' !

Fiercely intelligent but with cheeky charm, Eddy will be exposing the ludicrousness of real-life situations; addressing pertinent issues effecting today's society such as personal freedom, political correctness gone mad and taking responsibility for our own actions.

This will be Eddy's second solo show at The Edinburgh Festival Fringe, following his debut ‘Up the Anti' in 2005, a true story inspired by the raiding of his house by MI5.

EDDY BRIMSON IS FREE ' AND A BIG BELIEVER IN THE TRUE SPIRIT OF THE FREE FESTIVAL

'that's why this year, he's chosen to return to the Festivals roots and bring his show to Edinburgh as part of the FREE FESTIVAL.

The Berlin Wall

Berlin Wall .co.uk is a new information website about the historical Berlin Wall and its role in the Cold War. This website is for all those who are interested in German history and the division of Berlin into east and west from 1961 to 1990. With lots political and social information, Berlin Wall .co.uk allows visitors to identify with Germany and its charming capital.

The website explains why the Berlin Wall was built, why a lot of East Berliners wanted to escape to the “other side” and how the Cold War ended with the Fall of the Berlin Wall 40 years after the establishment of the German Democratic Republic.

A Wall of 155 kilometres with metal fences, watch towers and bunkers divided Berlin and Germany into two parts.

20090313-berlinwall.jpg

A lot of people lost their lives along the wall, most of them citizens of East Berlin who wanted to start a new and better life in West Berlin without Stasi control and the influence of political authority by the Soviet Union as the GDR’s “big brother”. “You are leaving the American sector”: as a constant reminder of this history this sign still stands at the legendary Checkpoint Charlie, which was the most famous border crossing point from east to west.

At Berlin Wall .co.uk, visitors can also find a historical map of Berlin showing the location of the former Berlin Wall. Many pictures show what still remains of the historical Berlin Wall located between Berlin Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg.

Berlin Wall .co.uk is a project of Berlintelligence by Eventelligence. ltd. and is owned by real Berliners who were there during the time of the wall and experienced first-hand the dramatic changes which took place when it came down.

14th ShanghaiTex will be Held in June 2009

Celebrating its 25th anniversary, the most established textile industry exhibition in China and the unique national brand, The 14th International Exhibition on Textile Industry (ShanghaiTex 2009) will be held on June 12-15, 2009 at Shanghai New International Expo Center, Pudong, Shanghai, PR China.

It is expected that the exhibition area will reach 120,000 sqm and over 1,500 international exhibitors will participate.

ShanghaiTex is held biennially in odd-numbered years in Shanghai since its establishment in 1984. The exhibition has been serving as a professional trading platform for cutting-edge textile machinery and technologies for the textile industry.

In ShanghaiTex 2009, the East & West wings of Shanghai New International Expo Center will also be fully utilized, displaying knitting, hosiery, printing, dyeing, finishing, spinning, non-woven, techtextile and weaving machinery, textile chemicals, spare parts and accessories, etc.

New Tax Initiatives Reinforce Confidence of Textile Industry

To promote market confidence and assist enterprises to survive in the tough times, the Chinese government has been launching new tax initiatives and measures. On October 21, The Ministry of Finance and State Administration of Taxation announced that starting from November 1, 2008, export tax rebate rate for 3,486 commodities will be increased, comprising 25.8% of all taxable commodities of Chinese customs.
As an example, export tax rebate rate of some textile products and apparels will be increased to 14%. Besides, the State Council has launched 10 measures for stimulating domestic demand. Starting from January 1, 2009, value-added tax (VAT) transformation reform will be implemented nationwide to all regions and industrial sectors.

For example, VAT is directly deducted when enterprises purchase equipment. Meanwhile, VAT exemption on importing equipment and VAT rebate to foreign-funded enterprises on purchasing China made equipment are cancelled, and a universal 3% of VAT rate will be implemented to small-scale taxpayers, etc. The textile industry is expected to benefit from the new policy, and it is generally beneficial to textile machinery manufacturers too as purchase of equipment might be increased with the raising purchasing power of machinery buyers & users, and thus enhance the sales of machinery.

Roskilde Festival 2009 - Four fresh bands from Scandinavia and Great Britain

Roskilde Festival has two Scandinavian blockbusters ready. A couple of best-selling acts who sell tickets and albums far away from their local, wind-swept birth towns.

RÖYKSOPP (N) combines frost-bitten and atmospheric electronica with Euro dance and 80s pop, which has sent the two Norwegians straight onto the charts. Their third album, Junior, soon sees the light of day and will certainly bring about new hits in the same way as was the case with the million-selling debut Melody A.M.

VOLBEAT (DK) just keeps winning new fans in Denmark and abroad. With the latest album Guitar Gangsters and Cadillac Blood, they tighten the grib on a unique sound that is best described as an oiled cocktail mix of Metallica, Danzig and Elvis Presley. World dominance may very well follow as the Danes this year also tour in the US.

British dance rock and folk
New acts keep jutting out in Great Britain. The tireless music media create more names than one manages to digest – but Roskilde Festival believes to have found two truly long-lasting ones.

FRIENDLY FIRES (UK) excel in melodic and danceable rock. Disco, rave, 80s synths and African-inspired rhythms are component parts in the young band's Talking Heads-inspired universe. This British band is for fans of Klaxons, The Rapture and LCD Soundsystem – and despite their young age they already deliver tremendous and very energetic concerts.

FRIGHTENED RABBIT (UK) plays semi-bitter, Scottish everyday rock in the tradition of Arab Strap and The Twilight Sad. Lead singer Scott Hutchison's candid stories – that are like outcasts of fortune – take the centre of the songs. They are accompanied by a band whose melodic folk rock often gets an extra shot of aggression and distortion when played live.

More than 1,500 Research and Industry Contributions for the 24th European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition!

WIP Renewable Energies (WIP) reports that a new record number of research and industry papers has been submitted for the 24th EU PVSEC - European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference (September 21-25, 2009) and Exhibition (September 21-24, 2009) which will be held in Hamburg, Germany.

This year’s 1,580 papers received mark another record high in the EU PVSEC’s history and represent a 20 % rise compared to the number of papers submitted for Valencia last year.

The global interest in the EU PVSEC is evident in the soaring number of 72 countries where the submitted papers originated: All European countries, North and South America, Asia and Africa, as well as Australia have contributed.

This international exchange on such a high professional level authenticates the EU PVSEC’s status as the world's leading PV solar event for a specialist audience.

Prof. Wim Sinke, Conference Chairman of the 24th EU PVSEC says: “It is absolutely impressing to see how the global photovoltaic R&D community responded to the Call for Papers.

This number is showing that we are able to continue the trend of strong growth. I also find it really encouraging that solar energy stays high on the agenda, in spite of the very difficult times this world is going through.

Photovoltaics is a key to our sustainable energy future and this Conference and Exhibition is at the heart of the global developments in this area; in science, technology, industry and applications. It is my great pleasure to chair this leading platform for PV solar energy."

Madonna's new face

Plastic surgery, facelifts and lid correction have been typical for ageing Hollywood stars. Now they're going out of fashion. Stars like Madonna now rely on New Cosmetic Surgery to rejuvenate their face and shape.

In New Cosmetic Surgery age-related changes in face and body are being treated not by lifting and silicon, but by the use of body-own, stem-cell-enriched fat.

"Madonna offers a good example for rejuvenation of the face by use of own fat," says DDr. Heinrich, Vienna-based expert in cosmetic surgery and anti-aging medicine. The most recent method in own fat transplantation is the use of own fat enriched with body-own stem cells. Patients from all over the world have come to see DDr. Heinrich and receive such treatment.

This method has made possible breast augmentation and rejuvenation of the face without scalpel, silicon, and plastic. "Own fat offers natural filling and has even shown a local rejuvenating effect, if you concentrate it with body-own stem cells," says DDr. Karl-Georg Heinrich, who is the first in Europe to offer this treatment.

In the first step of the treatment, fat will be harvested by use of microcannulas. Following concentration with body-own stem cells, the fat will be injected into the face or breast. This procedure may be performed under local anaesthesia or in twilight sleep. Only minimal aftercare is required, the patient is expected to be fully mobile and leave the clinic right after surgery.

Stem-cell-enriched own fat offers a lasting and safe treatment option for breast reconstruction, cosmetic breast augmentation, or aesthetic rejuvenation of the face. This has been proven in clinical studies in Japan and the USA.

Nine Inch Nails to Roskilde

Trent Reznor's visit this summer may be the last chance of experiencing the trendsetting industrial rock act.

It is not Wednesday yet – but Roskilde Festival simply cannot wait to get this one out. The festival has excellent news for all fans of night-black industrial rock, and is extra pleased to be able to present this act as it may the last chance.

NINE INCH NAILS (US) have taken the cold and mechanic stylistic features from industrial and passed them on to more wide-ranging rock. The undisputed front man Trent Reznor has added choruses, pop riffs and emotional lyrics to a traditionally clinical music genre – resulting in millions of sold records.

The latest and – according to Reznor himself – perhaps last album from Nine Inch Nails is called The Slip. It is available for download free of charge on the band's own website – as a token of appreciation from a popular artist to his devoted fans.

elysia announces musical equalizer

elysia announce the museq – the musical equalizer – as their third major product. The basic idea behind this analog EQ is the combination of premium sound shaping capabilities with optimally matched parameters which enables the user to find the desired results fast and precisely.

20090309-elysiag.jpg

The provided bands with their ample control ranges as well as some elysia-specific special features make sure that the museq can be flexibly used in any recording and mixing situation, and the stepped controllers are especially dedicated to mastering applications.

Each of the two channels offers three parametric bands with a switchable Q. The additional outer bands are low/high shelf designs which can be separately switched into a low/high cut mode with an extra resonance peak as a special finesse.

Each gain controller of the two times five bands can be altered from boost to cut mode which results in a notably well resolution of the control ranges and twice the number of available settings. Both channels have a switchable option for a stronger coloration of the signal to complete the musical master plan.

The circuit design of the museq is completely based on discrete analog technology. The entire signal processing is realized with single transistors in permanent class A mode, and even the power supply is composed of fully discrete circuits. An oversized transformer, selected capsuled conductive plastic potentiometers as well as special current feedback amplifiers are part of the technical refinement.

The combination of these elements aims at maximum signal quality and guarantees clean and powerful sound characteristics even when extreme settings are used.

Music in all kinds of colours to Roskilde

In true Roskilde spirit, this week's announcement offers a mixed music package. Whether the audience is into nightly electro, grandiose vocal harmonies, far out instrumental jams or intense genre mixtures, there is something in store for most.

FEVER RAY (S) is a new project by Karin Dreijer Andersson, one half of The Knife. Her solo project continues the style from the sibling duo's Silent Shout – eerie and atmospheric electro that can almost make snowdrop flowers and other heralds of spring wither.

FLEET FOXES (US) offers Beach Boys-like vocal harmonies combined with rustic folk music from long before the world was out of joint. The Seattle band is one of the most critically appraised young acts today, and they are played everywhere – from small alternative cafes to giant London megastores. Fans of gorgeous, acoustic pop music should not miss out on this.

THE MARS VOLTA (US) consists of some of the members from now-defunct post-hardcore band At the Drive-In. But this band draws just as much on Pink Floyd, Santana and improvised jazz music. Their live concerts are famous for being a psychedelic tour de force where the Americans prove their technical and musical mastery. Unfortunately, the eight men strong band had to cancel when they were last on the programme in 2005. Therefore, Roskilde Festival is happy to finally present them again in 2009.

DEN SORTE SKOLE (DK) mixes everything from Turkish traditional songs and Indian hymns to hip hop and dubstep in their own explosive hotchpotch. The concert at Roskilde Festival offers new twisted and surprising style mixtures from the vinyl lovers who were responsible for one of last year's greatest pop-up experiences at Roskilde Skate. This year they deserve to be part of the official programme.

The BWE specialist symposium on small wind turbines will be opened on March 14th by Hermann Albers, president of the German Wind Energy Association (BWE) and Dr. Anil Kane, president of the World Wind Energy Association (WWEA).

The symposium is also fully booked, “and there is already a very long waiting list!” says symposium co-ordinator Gudrun Kromrey.
“This once again shows that here in Husum we are not just always quick to recognise new, interesting and globally important energy issues, but that we can also provide meaningful support through our trade fairs “, sums up Husum Exhibition boss Hanno Fecke.

There is also a great deal of interest in the other main New Energy congress topics. On every day of the exhibition, homeowners, homebuilders, farmers, enterprises and local authorities will be able to get information and detailed advice – especially about the new German renewable energy and heat law.

There are also information events for the electrical, HVAC and roofing trades, for energy consultants, building services planners, architects, and public housing associations.

The Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival 2009

Most people conceive jazz as ‘complicated’. Its’ tunes, as do rhythms, continuously change. The musicians and singers of the genre often adopt a Quasimodo-like expression, not exactly a sight to behold. Nonetheless, that is jazz. It is full of expression.

The truth is no special trick is needed to enjoy a jazz music presentation, be it live or through a recording. Enjoying jazz is an individual appreciation. Interpreting its beauty is the ear of the beholder. For that reason, despite the numerous debates in relations to jazz as a music genre, as an art form or how it ought to be enjoyed, jazz is merely an outlet for freedom of expression. So, one may stick to one’s opinion as one wishes.

One thing for sure, jazz is an amalgamation of various musical approaches by diverse cultural backgrounds. As human beings evolve, influence and be influenced by changes from time to time, jazz also evolves. Jazz evolves through time, although some people remain devoted to its ‘genuine’ form, when it was first conceived.

Perhaps that is the cause of jazz popularity all over the world, its capability to be modified. Some people consider the ability to revel and comprehend jazz is a prestige of its own. It is no wonder that the space of Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival (JJF) is always packed solid.

35th annual Alaska Folk Festival in April 2009

20090301-affLogo2.gif
The Alaska Folk Festival was born on a cold winter evening in 1975 when a half dozen Juneau folk musicians decided to put on a performance in the Alaska State Museum and grandly announced it as the First Annual Southeast Alaska Folk Festival. Eight musicians and an audience of several hundred friends had so much fun that evening that it was obvious there would be more such festivals.

The Alaska Folk Festival is a non-profit organization run entirely by volunteers and donations. There is no admission charge for the festival concerts, workshops, dances or other events. No performers are paid either, with one exception. Each year there is a single "Guest Artist" act which is hired.

As the trees begin to turn brilliant shades of red, yellow and orange, we are reminded once again of winter's imminent approach. Time to clean out the chimney, gather firewood, wax the skis and rosin the bow. Time for friends and family to gather and share
music in the long winter ahead. The Folk Festival board too has been preparing for winter, with some great
concerts coming your way. I’ll let the board members who are producing those concerts tell you more about
them; or you can visit our website at www.akfolkfest.org.

As you know, 2009 is the fiftieth anniversary of Alaska statehood. It is also the thirty-fifth anniversary of the Alaska Folk Festival. (Wow! How does it go by so fast?) The board has been working hard on next year's festival to make it an even more special event. As always, the festival charges no admission at the door. However, the cost of producing the festival goes up every year. You can help us by volunteering some of your time or making a financial contribution with your membership to the Alaska Folk Festival.

As many of you need to plan ahead for spring, the dates of the Alaska Folk Festival are April 13 – 19, 2009. Looking ahead further we have April 5 – 11, 2010 and April 4 – 10, 2011.
