The Colomb Art Gallery - London - Gemma Detti - Solo exhibition
Gemma Detti - Italian Architect and Artist
The Colomb Art Gallery, London is proud to be holding a solo exhibition of art work by The Italian Architect, Gemma Detti.
Gemma has lived in London since 2004 with her current work principally dedicated to unearthing and interpreting emblems of the city’s man-made landscape. She employs sharp lines and strong colours on large canvases to striking effect. Besides her “architectural compositions”, she also paints figurative subjects, though the approach is softened and less analytical.
Gemma was born in Rome, where she studied art and later trained as an architect. Nevertheless her home is in the southern part of Tuscany, where she specialised in the restoration of farmhouses, historic buildings and the construction of new hotels and restaurants. She also spent many years in the South of Italy in the reconstruction after the earthquake of 1980.
In 1992 she studied fresco and marbling techniques in Urbino, which she applied to walls, plaster panels and wooden furnishings. She now works on canvas treated with quartz paint, creating a wall-like surface, on which she lays several coats of acrylic paints with natural pigments. (more)
Chiemsee Reggae Summer 2009
Having reached the 25,000 visitor per year mark, Chiemsee Reggae Summer is one the of the largest festivals of its kind. But numbers alone do not make CRS Europe's leading reggae festival, our mixture of Bavarian Gemütlichkeit, high expectations and legendary parties have propelled us to the top.
You will find our gorgeous festival site sitting at the base of the Chiemgau Alps. Despite its considerable size our festival is very compact and easily navigated by our visitors. Like in the past, the 15th Chiemsee Reggae Summer will take place from the 14nd to the 16th of August and is packed with an excellent line-up of over 40 bands, Dj's and Soundsystems.
The 22nd Cannabis Cup will be held from November 22nd-26th 2009.
The Cannabis Cup is a festival that was started in 1987 by High Times editor Steven Hager, who came to The Netherlands for an
interview with the founder of the first Dutch cannabis-seed company.
The Australian owner, Nevil, lived in a mansion filled with growrooms that Hager dubbed "The Cannabis Castle". The festival, held annually in Amsterdam, The Netherlands is one of the most famous cannabis events among cannabis smokers and cannabis-oriented businesses.
The public is exposed to a large variety of marijuana strains which they then help to judge. A team of judges decides every year which company brought the best marijuana, best new product or nicest booth to the festival.
In 2008, the 21st Cannabis Cup featured the induction of Peter Tosh into the Counterculture Hall of Fame, with performances by Andrew Tosh, Ky-mani Marley, CenC Love, Bushman, Rocker T, and Leon, as well as lectures by Roger Steffins.
Marijuana use is decriminalized in most parts of The Netherlands. Much of the marijuana present is from the different coffee shops around Amsterdam. Usually the Cannabis Cup has a surprise weed, a strain of marijuana that is new to the culture and will be tested by the judges. Many tourists go to Amsterdam to attend the festival.
Due to the decriminalization of marijuana, the Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) contents can be quite high. Therefore, it is recommended for judges to have a high tolerance to THC. Some of the stronger marijuana which comes in 'hash' form can have strengths of up to 75% THC.

This year's event will be headlined by the 2009 North American Course Racing Continental Championships as well as the US Kiteboarding National Championships.
The championships, which will be hosted by the Corpus Christi Yacht Club, will take place Tuesday, May 5th through Saturday, May 9th.
Although several kiteboarding championships have taken place during past U.S. Wind and Water events, this will be the first year for this level of competition.
"To have the Nationals and Continentals in Kitesurfing, the fastest growing water sport worldwide, in Corpus Christi is fantastic," said competitor and Omni Hotels GM Nils Stolzlechner.
The event will be sanctioned by ISAF (International Sailing Federation) and an official IKA (International Kiteboarding Association) Grade C event. The points awarded count towards the overall 2009 World Championship Tour competition.
In addition to the Kiteboarding events, the WW09 will also feature the US Windsurfing Regatta, the WW09 Volleyball Classic and the WW09 5K. The WW09 5K will once again be the official warm-up run for the annual Beach to Bay Marathon. (more)

Another giant British stadium rock band joins Roskilde Festival's programme. A terrific act whose tuneful Brit rock is made for festivals, sing-a-longs and arms in the air.
They have been a much requested act by Roskilde's audience all the way up through the 00s – so the festival is very happy to finally welcome the iconic brothers and their entourage back to Roskilde for the first time since 1995.
OASIS (UK) is perhaps the most popular rock'n'roll band in the UK. They have sold over 50 million albums worldwide. The band's two frontline figures, Liam and Noel Gallagher, have become almost as big icons as their two idols, John Lennon and Paul McCartney.
The Beatles’ music is the main inspiration in Oasis’ guitar-driven Brit rock – and with ”Wonderwall”, ”Live Forever” and ”Cigarettes & Alcohol”, the band has delivered contributions to rock history, which will stand side by side with the bigwigs for many years into the future.
CeBIT 2009 in Hannover - Germany is sending a signal to buck the crisis
The countdown has begun. CeBIT, the international ICT industry's leading event, is about to start. 'CeBIT 2009 is sending a signal to buck the international crisis mentality,' declared Ernst Raue, Managing Board Member at Deutsche Messe. 4,300 companies from 69 nations are going to be represented at the event, compared with 5,845 in 2008, he said. 'Given the depth of the world economic crisis, this number represents a success.
In view of the overall business environment, we are extremely satisfied. 4,300 enterprises will demonstrate they are in solid shape and want to put the recession behind them quickly,' he continued. 'At CeBIT 2009 the goal is - now more than ever - to develop new business and act boldly and with confidence vis-à-vis the future.'
Given the latest economic data, Raue accorded CeBIT a special significance. He pointed to the Japanese economy, which he said was currently shrinking at a double-digit rate, with the gross domestic product (GDP) down 12.7 percent year-on-year.
He continued that the U.S. economy had reached an existential low, with the GDP there down by almost four percent. And for Germany, the German Institute for Economic Research DIW was predicting negative growth of 4.5 percent in the first quarter year-on-year, he reported. (more)
Oxford Jazz Festival 2009
This year’s Oxford Jazz Festival was launched with a ‘pre-event’ at the North Wall Arts Centre on 23 January 2009. The Jazz Elite Series - three, once-monthly performances in the lead-up to the Oxford Jazz Festival - began with Mark Bassey, one of Britain’s finest trombonists, supported by local trio 3bpm.
Jazz trombonist Mark Bassey has been described as “a superb and witty player”; “a highly versatile musician who’s playing can stretch from raucous to an exquisite sound with perfect phrasing”. The witty side of Bassey’s character was in evidence; with the audience treated to what can only be described as stand-up comedy between numbers. Bassey played a mix of styles throughout the evening from bop to funk, including some self-penned numbers, and original work by Martin Pickett (3bpm pianist).
Of the solo’s performed, most notable were Bassey’s super dynamic stretches on ‘Alone Together’ and Paul Jefferies’ (3bpm) beautifully lyrical bass work on Pickett’s original piece, ‘Soft Focus’. There was a special treat for Basie and Hefty fans with a totally swinging version of ‘Jive at Five’ and ‘Fidgets’. Bassey’s performance was an opportunity to announce that tickets for the Oxford Jazz Festival, which will take place over Easter (9-12 April), and annually thereafter, have officially gone on sale. More about Roskilde Festival 2009
In spite of not being sold out, Roskilde Festival '08 makes a profit of DKK 887,405 (approx. € 119,115) for distribution.
About 68,000 people enjoyed the music, sun and atmosphere at last year’s festival. Although there were 7,000 unsold tickets by the end of the party, there is still a profit to be distributed for humanitarian and cultural purposes through the Roskilde Festival Charity Society. And that in spite of the fact that the budget was 70,000 sold tickets.
The total profit thus lands at DKK 887,405 (approx. € 119,115) – which is both surprising and well-done according to Roskilde Festival.
Photo: Jens Dige / Rockphoto
The weather factor
Part of the explanation lies in the weather:
"The great weather has contributed to an increased sale of food and drinks in the many stalls that are primarily run by local associations and tradesmen. Roskilde Festival receives an increased percentage of the trade stalls’ turnover in order to cover a possible loss if ticket sales are not as expected," says Roskilde Festival’s administrative manager, Henrik Rasmussen.
However, the associations that handle trade and service at the festival can rejoice at the fact that audiences were both exceptionally hungry and thirsty. In total, DKK 9,381,100 (approx. € 1,259,208) have been earned for the associations.
A Two-Man Show featuring Raf Veulemans and Marc Janssens
Belgian artists Veulemans and Janssens have one thing in common: they share a passion for the eternal conflict between good and evil, life and death. In their works, this conflict is played out very differently though - while Veulemans stresses the beauty of decay and fragility of life in his taxidermist sculptures and installations featuring the bodies of real animals, Janssens’ sculptures are completely man-made and focus on the struggle of overcoming a mere physical existence.
Often, his figures appear to wish they could escape from the sufferings their bodies are exposed to by battered machines and strange apparatuses holding them captive, and to release their battered spirits.
American artist Christina Graf’s delicate paper installation titled “Merry-Go-Sorrow” will be presented in The Vault, Strychnin’s back room that is reserved for individual artists on special occasions. Opens Friday, March 6th at 7 p.m. (more)
Norwegian bands at Roskilde Festival 2009
Katzenjammer, Klovner i Kamp, Satyricon, Skambankt and Yoga Fire add a Norwegian touch to Roskilde Festival’s current programme.
by:Larm is the name of Norway’s biggest music business festival which has taken place this weekend. Roskilde Festival marks the event by announcing a number of hot acts from the homeland of whey cheese. There is both rock, metal, hip hop, pop and folk from the manifold and rich Norwegian music scene.
The headline above is of course to be taken with a pinch of salt. More Norwegian bands are sure to follow the past couple of days' barrage later on. But for now the sight will be turned a little further south when Roskilde Festival announces new acts in the coming week.
Rosklide Festival 2009 - See you at Roskilde Festival 2 - 5 July 2009. Warm-up from 28 June at 08.00.
